Ministry of Home Affairs (MOHA) intends to review the role of the Anti-Smuggling Unit (UPP) in an effort to improve security, especially related to smuggling on the borders of the country.
Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said the matter contained in the UPP transformation plan which is being prepared before a proposal submitted to the National Security Council.
"Through the proposed transformation plan UPP, UPP scope of operations will be expanded throughout the country to increase strength and enhance enforcement capabilities smuggling activities across the country," he said when winding up debate on the 11th Malaysia Plan for his ministry at the State Council here Monday.
He said that, pending the completion of the preparation of proposals, the ministry through the police had taken immediate steps to streamline aspects of border control, especially in the northern states of Peninsular Malaysia.
He said, some improvements and actions were undertaken which included dividing the area of operations under Ops Insights from Bukit Kayu Hitam, Kedah until Bukit Batu Putih, Perlis to three assignment zones so that execution of the operation will be more focused.
Wan Junaidi said, patrolling on foot and using four-wheel drive will be conducted during the day and night in high risk areas or 'hotspots' that are used for smuggling.
He said, for the deployment of assets such as guns, vests and night vision device appears to be made immediately proceeds to improve preparedness and ability of the security forces at the border.
"The ministry will hold discussions with the National Security Council, which regulates the border fences to mend fences back damaged and ill," he said.
In the meantime, Wan Junaidi explained smuggling still occur due to several factors which include the perception of local residents living in border smuggling of thought without them would cripple the economy.
In addition, he said the activity also occur due to the attitude of greedy smugglers who want to gain many times without thinking about the negative impact on society.
