PETALING JAYA: The deputy president of PPBM has proposed that university students be made to undergo longer periods of practical training than is currently required of them.
Mukhriz Mahathir was commenting on a recent Bernama report that said 54,103 graduates were unemployed for six months after completing their studies last year.
Higher Education Minister Idris Jusoh said this figure was based on the Graduands Detection Survey System (SKPG), which recorded 238,187 completing their studies last year.
Mukhriz said a common reason why employers didn’t hire fresh graduates was because many did not have the relevant experience.
He also claimed he had often heard complaints from employers that six months was too short a time to properly train an intern.
“There must be a way for students to still gain credit from the university while, at the same time, gain experience working as interns in companies,” he said at a talk entitled “Apa Rakyat Nak?”
“This experience helps students in terms of job marketability after they graduate.”
The talk was broadcast through Facebook Live on the official Facebook page of the party’s women’s wing.
Mukhriz said such extended training was already in practice in more advanced countries like Germany, Japan and South Korea.
He also noted that while fresh graduates were unable to gain employment, the country was seeing an increase in the number of foreign workers.
“We need to pay attention to the fact that our salaries are not increasing in tandem with the cost of living.
“There is massive unemployment among our locals but the number of foreign workers in the country keeps increasing.
“The fact that there are so many foreign workers is suspicious. The reason often cited is because our locals aren’t willing to do the dangerous, dirty and difficult jobs.
