RM1.6 billion Kulim International Airport project will kick off, not mere words - Kedah MB

LANGKAWI: The move to construct the RM1.6 billion Kulim International Airport (KXP) will not remain just mere words.

Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir said instead the state government would continuously strive to ensure that the project will be implemented.

He said the site for the air cargo hub centre had been identified and two studies involving its construction have also provided positive feedback.

“The federal government is also not against us (the state government) to continue with the project apart from proposing that it should be implemented via a private financial initiative.

“Many companies had shown interest, including those from China and Europe over the construction of KXP,” Mukhriz told reporters after opening the Kedah Business and Investment Summit (KIBIS) here today.

Also present was International Strategy Institute (ISI) chairman, Cheah Chyuan Yong.

Mukhriz said two experienced companies in the construction of airports had provided positive feedback, recommending that the construction of the KXP be hastened.

"The two studies conducted by the companies suggested that (KXP construction) focus on cargo aviation, could boost Kedah's economy.

"This is also supported by its proximity to Kulim and Penang High Tech Parks which could be utilised by importers and exporters," he said.
